Pregnancy Non Happenings

Being pregnant has not really been a "problem" to date. My morning sickness was mild to the point of nonexistent. I even worried there was something wrong at some points during the 1st trimester because I felt okay most of the time. I

can still sausage my way into my "regular" zip type pants with & without the Bella Band. I have been exercising more than I did before I was even pregnant and sort of eating well.

I have little to no heart burn and there is nothing I cannot eat. Okay that is an outright lie - onions just make me gag but that was a before I was pregnant thing too.

I did have that headache that I bitched about over the weekend (it is gone now, thanks for asking ;) which is probably somewhat related to hormones but mostly I STRONGLY dislike sleeping on my side. And since I do not have much choice I am sucking it up and sleeping on my side but even with my Snoogle it is uncomfortable and gives me the worst neck aches ever.

And there is this pregnancy acne thing - Mount Saint Helen's erupted on my lower jaw over the weekend - my god, I wanted to cry from the pain but again it is livable.

BUT seriously there could be so many OTHER things to bitch about, right? Right.

Maybe I am just used to these things now? Maybe I am aware they will happen so it is not as "new" as the last time? Perhaps I am just over it all. What I am really trying to say is that I feel pregnant but I do not. I am just not as "sensitive" as I was during the 1st pregnancy about pregnancy 'things'. Maybe those all night nursing sessions have turned me into a super mom!? Ha. Seriously though I remember peeing 50 times a night most nights and also if I went to bed past 9 pm when I was pregnant with Matthew, I was royal bitch. Now when I wake up in the night, I am like 'eh I can hold it' and go back to sleep and I do not go to bed before 11p most nights.

The only thing that has "bothered" me this go around is the fact that if I wake up in the middle of night for reasons OTHER than needing to go pee, I am up. For instance, last night Matthew fell out of bed and woke up crying because he was cold and/or uncomfortable so I put him back in bed and he went to sleep like, well, like a baby. I laid in bed and "wrote" long rambling blog entries in my head, made endless to do lists, tossed and turned and moved the dogs around trying to get more room in bed. I tried to clear my mind and think of nothing all Zen like. I went pee a few times and generally just laid there listening to the rain and storms go by.

I am not tired today. Not like I would normally be. It is so strange. I hate sitting up like that. I mean if I have a genuine reason to sit up and worry then it makes sense but there was nothing to bother me last night (or any other time this has happened since being pregnant.) I was tired but could not sleep. It reminded me of nursing. Most nights I could do the all night nursing session and barely bat an eye but there would be that one day when it would catch up and all hell would break loose. I would be cranky, tired, bitchy... sigh.

When I was pregnant with Matthew even though I had no idea I sort of assumed it was the human response to getting ready for a baby. I still think this but I keep wondering 'WON'T THERE BE TIME ENOUGH FOR ME TO CONTEMPLATE MY NAVEL ALL NIGHT LONG IN AUGUST?' And also 'Ah I already know to expect that I am not going to sleep well for the next 12-24 months so why do we have to REHEARSE this all over again!?!?"

So for selfish reasons, I am here to bitch about my night time wakings. Wail, poor me, right?!

Okay well so whatever - Linda had her baby yesterday! What a cute little peanut he is and she looks fab! Go say 'hi and congrats'!

Night Swimming

Oh how much did I love that REM song when I was in college? - oh shit did I just date myself? Eh, I love it still when I hear it - well I hear it now floating around in my head & I am sitting here wondering if I still have a CD with that song on it somewhere. Or I could upload it to my as yet to be used iPOD. Seriously I am both to lazy and perhaps tech challenged to figure out how to make it work so it just sits at the computer desk un-used. HOW THE HELL DOES THAT THING WORK!?

The past two nights Matthew has been up. The night before last, he woke up screaming. About what you might ponder? Well, our bed time routine goes like this: we read books for bed, Matthew gets into bed and Kevin comes in and makes up a story than I go in and tell a story and in theory he is supposed to go to sleep. Well, I decided I read three books to Matthew and I was done, no story from me. SO I did not go back in and Matthew fell right to sleep. At 11:30p he was screaming. When I finally had him calmed down he said "Mommy tell me a story..." Apparently, I should have just sucked it up and told him the story at 8:00p, no?

In an attempt to get Matthew to sleep beyond 5:30a or at least STAY in bed until a more reasonable hour, we tried the paper with the number six written on it. I told him the numbers need to match at which point he can get up. He was so mad because I called it a "game" that he would not let me read the bed time stories and also stayed up until 9:15p. Sigh. BUT THEN he was up at 2:00a. He looked right at me and said "Mommy, I am up and I have to pee. Is it time to get up yet?!?! (All the while staring at the clock - in fear? trepidation that he missed SIX? ACK) Me: sobbing into my hands. I took him to the potty after which we sat in the chair for a few minutes to get him calmed back down for sleep. He did go back to sleep until he started screaming for us at the usual 5:40a. We will try again tonight just because I am stubborn & I am of the mind you have to try at least three times with toddlers before giving up.

Truth be known my kid - he gets too much sleep. He just does not have the capacity to sleep like other kids and I am coming to terms with this, seriously. If he goes to bed at 9p and gets up at 5:30-6:00a that is 9 hours plus an hour and 45 minute nap - that is what Matthew needs to be well rested & apparently what we are giving him is just too much, especially if I want him to sleep in beyond 5:40a. I wish it were not so but it is. I either give up the early mornings by putting him to sleep later or I give up watching my favorite shows by putting him to bed later. SUCH an issue, eh?! I would rather watch TV which is so utterly pathetic to admit and also I just need to get to bed on time...

On top of the recent early mornings and night time rumblings, can I just say I pee like 5, maybe 6 times a night? I know, it is normal but oh lawdy I am tired. Combined with our own bad habits of staying up too late, it has been a bit hellish in our home as of late.

Hump Day

Do the words 'hump day' make you giggle like a prepubescent teenager? 'Cause it does that for me... Eh, well, what can I say, small mind - easily entertained?

I have to say that I am at a loss as to what I should write. I poured my little heart out the past few days in various ways so I have NOTHING. Nothing. Oh I am sure I will come up with something to ramble about here... Aren't you glad?!

I can tell you that Matthew would not go to sleep last night and he woke up in the middle of the night saying his tummy hurt - it did not really hurt (I was not feeling well last evening and I was laying on the couch half asleep feeling yucky and I think he was imitating me and I did not really explain to him why my tummy hurt so he may have been worrying about me in his sleep? Do you think kids do this? Eh, well it was TOO much greeeeasy pizza...).

I think Santana actually woke him up because he (Santana) was being a freaky spaz. Santana wanted to go out 50 times and his stomach kept making crazy ass un dog like noises. Then at 3am it dawned on me that no one feed the dogs last night... Shit. Santana also took it upon himself to not only be loud and annoying most of the night but also to pee on the corner of the couch (likely to let us know how unhappy he was that the poor underfed dog missed his meal... HA) so I had the opportunity to clean up the pee this morning. Yeah for me... Also, Lucy started barking for no good reason at 5:30am. AND. and Kevin slept through it all. That is the part that irks me the most really ;) I finally dragged myself out of bed at 6:15am because I just figured the hell with it. Kevin slept for 40 minutes longer... GROWL.

Err, ah, so how about those striking workers in France? I note this because I have a co-worker who likes to travel the world and she is leaving this evening to go to Paris and then rural France to go the Beaune Wine Auction and wine tasting in Burgundy. I live vicariously through Laura because she is super hip, fun and has this sense of adventure that I hope I can foster down the road once Matthew is older.

I had the chance to go to Europe as a young person but I was truly a petulant teenager and never took my mom up on the offer (Nice segue way, huh?) I wish I had but I did not so it is a place I dream about visiting all the time! I have many relatives who still live in England, The Netherlands and France. I will go one day soon but for now I am really interested in learning some of the traditions from my heritage. I am some what of a mutt - my father's side is Italian and Polish (with some Ukrainian in there as well) but my mom is 100% Dutch.

My mom visited her family in the Netherlands often when I was child and always brought back lovely treats (that surely gave me this mouth full of cavatities but oh my lord, the licorice, stroopwafels, and Hagelslag - oh if you ever have a chance try all these dutch treats and more - makes me drool just thinking about them!) She also would often tell stories about growing up during the war and post war in Holland.

I used to know a handful of dutch words, I could sing songs in dutch, I generally could understand the language when my mom had her parents or sisters to visit and I could count to 20. My mom and I also used to visit this lovely little Dutch store in San Jose my whole life and I miss this place dearly. But that has really been the extent of my Dutch knowledge.

I decided this year now that Matthew is getting older I wanted return to some of my Dutch roots so I am planning to celebrate St Nicholas Day on December 6th as best I can. I may not be very savvy at this so I am going to start out small! I have ordered some stuff from a Dutch web site that I found. That is about all I have done...

My mom even told me how her mother used to do St Nicholas Day (she said they actually started the celebration on November 5th in the evening) There were white and black gloves involved. I highly doubt I will go that far but it was neat to hear her story about how they would celebrate when she was young and the war had ravished most of Europe. I could just imagine what it was like back then - I could just picture my Oma & Opa, my mom and my two aunties giggling over the changing of the gloves all their tiny apartment in The Hague!

I am trying to find an inexpensive pair of wooden shoes but holy crap real wooden shoes direct from Holland (or even a store stateside) are expensive (both the painted and unpainted kind.) So that is what I am planning for December 6th because I am not really stressed out enough for the holidays! In all seriousness, I am very excited to start doing this with my family! Now I just need to come up with some fun little poems for Matthew and Kevin.
